Data transmission

The data transmission rate of byteflight is 10 Mbit/s. Since this type of high data rate cannot be reliably transmitted using copper wire, a plastic fibre optic cable is used for byteflight. This type is also used by the  MOST bus; details can be found in that chapter.

Like CAN, byteflight also uses a message-oriented transmission method. All messages are made available to all bus devices at the same time according to the producer-consumer model. The message format is also like the CAN bus. Beginning with a 6 bit start sequence, up to 12 data bytes can be transmitted in an 8 bit message identifier and a length byte in the following data fields. With the final 2 byte CRC sequence a high error detection rate is reached. Even the bit coding is equivalent to the CAN protocol. However byteflight uses the framing of each byte for the bit post-synchronisation using start and stop bits and not bit stuffing as CAN does.
