Optical bus system
Modern luxury vehicles have all types of multimedia applications. Audio, TV and most recently even Internet access have already found their way into these automobiles. These types of applications require the transmission of large quantities of data in real-time (without delays). The transmission rate of maximum 1 Mbit/s with the CAN bus system are no longer sufficient for the transmission of such multimedia data. The necessary band widths are many Mbit/s. These data rates can be realised in bus systems with electrical signal transmission only with enormously high technical effort and therefore high costs. Electrical transmission media (bus lines) are no longer useable for that type of data intensive applications. Optical transmission media is used instead, especially plastic fibre optic cable.
