Bus systems like the CAN bus belong to the electronic data processing system in a further sense. Such systems today function digitally. To understand this it is necessary to look at a few fundamental features of digital technology:

Digital systems know only two states: "ON" and "OFF". No other states are allowed in between (there is no "half ON"). For the CAN bus this means that the signal in the bus line can only accept two values:

• Value "1" (also called "ON"),  and
• Value "0" (also called "OFF" ).
