The OSI reference model



The International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) has adopted a standard for the description of communication systems. This model of data communication is called the OSI reference model (OSI = Open-Systems-Interconnection) and in the meantime it has been recognised internationally.

The OSI reference model consists of seven layers and therefore is also called the seven layer model. Each layer represents an operating area.
