Off-board networking
Up to this point we have considered systems which are networked inside the vehicle (on-board networking). However, the system boundaries can easily be expanded. Thus even today modern vehicles are taking into consideration traffic events in the direct proximity of the vehicle. At the same time diverse parties, such as other traffic participants and vehicles, traffic directions, traffic lights and systems for traffic control play a role here. Various demands, such as reduction of pollutants and less accidents, are met through the networking of all of these parties.
This so-called "off-board networking" also considers traffic conditions which are at a further distance away (e.g. accidents on the motorways) and can warn or reroute vehicles which will be affected by this traffic incident.
