The MOST bus



Several automobile manufacturers, their suppliers and some software developers have combined to form a team. This team calls itself "Media Oriented Systems Transport Co-operation" and has set as a goal for themselves the development of a uniform bus system for quick data transmission. This system is the MOST bus. The label "Media Oriented Systems Transport" means that the system is designed for the transmission of multimedia data.

The MOST bus is an optical bus system which has a transmission rate of 21.2 Mbit/s. This high transmission rate seems plausible if one realises that just the transmission of a video signal with stereo sound alone requires a data transmission rate of 6 Mbit/s.

These data intensive applications can only have the transmission of the control signals done with the CAN bus. Additional lines must be installed in which the signals travel in analogue form for the picture and sound data.
